RESOURCE CENTER MANAGEMENT FOR BANGLADESHIS

Education officials from Bangladesh recently completed a course on resource centre development and management. The course trained the school officials in managing Upazila Resource Centres (URCs) in the context of change.

Scattered in nearly 500 sites across the country, the URCs are self-sustaining learning centers that cater to the needs of teachers for their professional development, and to the students for self-directed, independent learning.

The training program, conducted by SEAMEO INNOTECH, was designed to upgrade the officials’ leadership and management competencies in innovative approaches to implementing, monitoring and evaluating services to its clients.

Critical evaluation and analysis of administrative structures and operations of learning resource centers in developed and developing countries were made to increase their awareness of how other countries serve the educational needs of their learners.

Activities like visioning, mind mapping and study visits were done to lay the ground for visualizing their ideal URC—with an improved management system, as well as training and development programs. Other activities included group dynamics, role playing and simulations to enhance team building and emotional bonding; and case studies, video viewing and field trips to promote active-interactive learning.

Participants in the course came up with a set of guidelines to improve the URCs, aside from prototypes of materials for data gathering, advocacy and social mobilization.

The month-long training was coordinated and facilitated by SEAMEO INNOTECH Training Specialist Ms. Sharon Berlin-Chao.
