EFFECTIVE
MANAGEMENT OF PRIMARY SCHOOLS
THE
COURSE ON EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT of Primary Schools
was held from June 30-July 26, 2003 to improve the
management skills of a group of Bangladeshi education
officials.
The course gave the participants the opportunity to
be exposed to primary school management practices
in the Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries
that can be applied in the Bangladeshi setting.
The participants came up with their vision for the
Bangladeshi school after defining the success profile
of Bangladeshi school heads and the components of
an effective primary school. Lecture sessions focused
on topics such as policy-making and program planning,
pre-service and in-service teacher, school-based management,
transformational leadership and instructional supervision.
Technology leadership sessions gave an overview on
the role of school managers in advocating technology
integration in administration and teaching, and gave
the participants basic skills in selected productivity
and presentation tools.
Other training sessions dealt with participatory monitoring
and evaluation of teacher performance, performance
management and planning and managing continuing professional
development. Administrative management of non-teaching
staff and school facilities, resource generation and
linking with the community, government and non-government
groups rounded out the participants’ capabilities
in dealing with all aspects of primary school management.
Visits to the Department of Education and to some
elementary schools in Metro Manila and in the province
of Batangas served to show the participants first-hand
how primary schools operate in urban and rural settings.
