RESOURCE
CENTER DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT COURSE
A GROUP OF EDUCATION OFFICIALS from Bangladesh
underwent a month-long training on leadership and
management to improve their competencies in handling
teacher-training centres in their country.
The Bangladeshis work for learning centres in their
country called Upazila Resource Centres (URCs). These
self-sustaining centres cater to the needs of teachers
for their professional development, and to students
for their self-directed learning.
SEAMEO INNOTECH facilitated the month-long training
program from October 27 to November 22, 2003, coordinated
by training specialist Ms. Sharon Berlin-Chao. It
was part of a series of training courses intended
for officials of the URCs.
The course was specifically designed to heighten their
awareness and appreciation of how countries share
knowledge, expertise and resources to serve the educational
needs of the people of Bangladesh, regardless of ethnic
and cultural differences.
The training activities were geared towards upgrading
their management competencies in applying innovative
approaches to the services they provide for teachers,
students and other target clients. Apart from structured
visits to several institutions in the country, discussions
on such topics as the learning resource centers (LRCs)
in developed and developing countries were also covered.
This provided them with deeper insights into the goals,
operations and impact on teacher professional development
and student achievement of said LRCs.
At the end of the program, the Bangladeshi officials
came up with prototypes of data gathering materials
for needs assessment, implementation, and monitoring
and evaluation of URCs. They also prepared a set of
recommendations to improve learning centres in Bangladesh,
as well as created prototypes of advocacy and social
mobilization materials to heighten public interest
in URCs.
