International Benchmarking Program on School-based Management

SEAMEO INNOTECH facilitated a two-part international benchmarking program for a number of its alumni from May 25 to June 5, 2004.

The program included participation in the recently concluded SEAMEO-UNESCO Education Congress in Bangkok, Thailand, and study visits to the Smart Schools of Malaysia and the Thinking Schools of Singapore.

The Education Congress and Expo, held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre, focused on the theme “Adapting to Changing Times and Needs.” The Congress attracted hundreds of participants that included education practitioners, academicians, program managers and officers of development agencies, NGO specialists, and even students.

The three-day Congress tackled three sub-themes—a) Equity and Access to Quality Education: Road to Poverty Alleviation, b) Openness to Change and Respect for Diversity; and c) Technology Advancement Impact on Culture, Peace and Development. The event also featured exhibits about new programs, products, and services related to education and ICT. After the three-day education congress, the group of INNOTECH alumni, together with Centre consultant Dr. Ophelia P. Veniegas and Administrative Officer Mrs. Grace Cuadro continued the mission to visit and observe the Thinking Schools of Singapore and the Smart Schools of Malaysia.

The Smart Schools of Malaysia is one of the flagship programs undertaken by the Multimedia Super Corridor, which is tasked with propelling the country into a regional and international technology and telecommunications hub by 2020.

The Thinking Schools of Singapore, on the other hand, is the country’s approach to meeting the challenges of the future. It will ensure that Singapore will be a nation of thinking and committed citizens, capable of contributing to its country’s continued growth and prosperity.
