Multigrade
Teaching for Lao Education Officials
Multigrade teachers from Lao PDR
came to the Center in January 2005 to participate
in the two-week course on multigrade teaching facilitated
by SEAMEO INNOTECH.
Part of their training was a structured
visit to the Schools Division of Ilocos Norte, which
was recommended by the Philippine Department of Education
for its outstanding achievements in multigrade instruction.
They also had a chance to interact with and learn
from the National Multigrade Teacher achiever for
2003. For comparisons, they also visited a multigrade
school in an urban area.
Apart from these, the Lao
education officials were given orientation on the
multigrade program in the country, as well as specific
experiences of multigrade teaching in urban and rural
settings. Expert practitioners pf multigrade instruction
provided insights on the latest research studies
concerning multigrade teaching, the components of
an effective multigrade school, and basic skills
on how to be a successful multigrade teacher.
The
training component likewise included a visioning
session for the Lao educators on their desired multigrade
school, the guidelines for an effective organization
and operation of multigrade classes, and materials
development processes for science and math instructions.
At
the end of the training, the Lao teachers presented
sample multigrade learning materials for peer evaluation.
These were compiled and distributed among them for
adaption and use in their won multigrade classes.
They also drafted action plans for training new multigrade
teachers and re-training experienced ones.
