Nurturing
Talents for Effective School Leadership
A total of 20 public school administrator aspirants
in the municipalities of Malabon and Navotas benefited
in the latest capability-building initiative of Philippine
Senator Teresa Aquino Oreta, dubbed "Project TAO
NURTURES" or Nurturing Talents and Utilizing
Resources for Effective School Leadership."
Project TAO NURTURES targeted school head aspirants
in 43 elementary schools and 12 high schools in Malabon
and Navotas. The one-week training focused on school
management and various facets of leadership--instructional
leadership and supervision, strategic leadership,
human resources leadership, micro-political leadership,
technology leadership, and managerial and cultural
leadership.
Started in late 2004 and completed in February 2005,
the series of training on TAO NURTURES had four batches
of 50 assistants to the principal and senior teachers
who received recognition as TAO NURTURES Fellow.
The participants were chosen from a number of hopefuls
who demonstrated leadership qualities, relatively
young and have graduate-level preparation. From their
group, the next generation of school heads are expected
to be chosen and recruited. Backed with learnings
gained from the training, they should be ready with
the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes required
of a successful school administrator.
For several years now, Senator Aquino Oreta has
been spearheading a number of training programs and
research studies focused on promoting an upgrading
the quality of basic education system in the country.
Most significant of her efforts is the enactment
into law of Republic Act No. 9155, otherwise known
as the Governance of Basic Education Act that provides
the overall framework for the empowerment of school
heads.
Project TAO NURTURES is envisioned to help create
a significant impact on the delivery of basic education,
specifically in the schools division of Malabon and
Navotas. directly benefiting from it are the students
of the two municipalities who shall enjoy, among
others an improved quality of instruction through
their school heads' commitment to excellence.
