Coaching Leaders to Lead

Until recently this year, 98% of the total 204 school administrators in the Schools Division of Cagayan de Oro City have not had any training in leadership and management for the past three years. This reality, among others, has been seen by the teachers and by the administrators themselves to have upset the quality of instruction of teachers, and consequently, the students' academic performance. As a response, the Schools Division Leadership came up with Project ORO—Coaching Leaders to Lead.

The 30 elementary school principals of the Department of Education Schools Division of Cagayan de Oro City flew to Manila recently to undergo training on educational leadership at SEAMEO INNOTECH. The training, called Coaching Leaders to lead, ran from September 26-30, 2005. It sought to strengthen the leadership skills of school heads in order to raise the quality of administrative and instructional supervision and thereby improve the performance of teachers and students.

INNOTECH training consultants Dr. Ophelia Veniegas, Dr. Dave Catanyag and Dr. Frank Trespeces supervised the carious sessions under educational leadership lined up for the weeklong training. The three specialists shared their knowledge and insights on instructional leadership and supervision, the politics of leadership, and the 21st century roles of school heads, among others. At the end of the course, the participants drafted a conceptual plan for instructional leadership, a vision for their schools and an action plan for achieving this vision.
