eXCELS Chooses First Set of Philippine FLTs

LEARNTECH eXCELS now has its first set of flexible learning tutors (FLTs) in the Philippines. The selection was made following a four-day training in December 2005 at the Philippine Normal University (PNU) in Manila.

The selected FLTs all came from the PNU main campus. Among them were Prof. Alice M. Karaan (College of Languages, Literature and Linguistics), Prof. Maria Ruth M. Regalado (College of Education, Center for Teaching and Learning), and Prof. Rita B. Ruscoe (College of Arts and Social Sciences, and Assistant to the VP for Academics). The three professors would be fully involved in the entire run of the Project.

PNU, the country's premier teacher training institution, and the partner of SEAMEO INNOTECH in implementing Project eXCELS in the Philippines, initially nominated a total of nine education specialists and professors from its difference campuses. The other nominees would serve as alternate tutors.

The four-day training involved an orientation of what LEARNTECH eXCELS is all about, its stakeholders, and the roles, responsibilities and expectations from FLTs. It also included a hands-on training on the use of the flexible learning management system (FLMS). The FLMS is a Moodle-based program that would facilitate the on-line instruction of the Project's target learners—school heads from three selected sites in Southeast Asia.
