Towards Rizal Technological University's Vision

SEAMEO INNOTECH conducted a capability-enhancement workshop with the Rizal Technological University (RTU) last 28 May to 01 June 2006. RTU tapped SEAMEO INNOTECH for the design and delivery of the training program in line with the university’s staff development program, specifically for RTU’s school managers.

The course was thus designed to enhance the leadership skills of the key academic and administrative managers of the university towards attaining their vision to become “a university of choice across disciplines.”

A total of 100 university officials attended the course, consisting of 95 direct participants and five (5) chairs of committees. Participants included the university president, the four vice presidents, as well as academic and administrative staff from the main (Mandaluyong City) and the Pasig campuses.

During the opening ceremonies, RTU President Dr. Jose Macaballug emphasized that the workshop was an opportunity for the professional advancement and strengthening of the RTU “family”.

The workshop commenced with the module on “The Benchmark for Peak Performance” in which it was stressed that the key to peak performance is self-responsibility. Situation analysis exercises were conducted to give the participants a chance to assess the current state of the university and chart their vision for the RTU. They were also asked to assess the issues and change opportunities in their respective colleges, departments, and units.

A session on “Personal Effectiveness” underscored one’s attitude as an indicator for a person’s success. In this line, the next session on “Taking Total Responsibility” challenged the participants to continually ask themselves how else they can “rise above the circumstances” and “achieve desired results.” Part of this module was an exercise on how the participants should be able to disentangle themselves from negative thought that may otherwise negatively affect their ownership of their issues.

A more comprehensive session on how the participants could manage their superiors, subordinates, peers and the public was subsumed in the seminar as well. Covered in this module was “Instructional Leadership”.

At the end of the workshop, the participants were asked to come up with their action plans relative to the insights gained. The university personnel committed to consolidate the action plans and submit these to the Office of the University President.
