e-IMPACT Create Waves in Schools in CamSur
Three multigrade schools in Libmanan South District in Camarines Sur Province are reaping the benefits of a school-community-based instructional scheme inspired by the e-IMPACT system.
The case of Beguito Viejo Elementary School is one where IMPACT significantly created a positive effect on the quality of education. Merely two years after adopting the technology, the school almost doubled its rating in the National Achievement Test (NAT) for SY 2008-2009 with 64.16 percent, up from the rating of 34.38 percent in SY 2006-2007.
Another multigrade school, the Beguito Nuevo Elementary School benefited from the system where parents are tapped as teacher aides to ensure a smooth run of classes. The school’s NAT rating increased from 42.94 percent in SY 2007-2008 to 54.27 percent in SY 2008-2009.
The third school, which is the Palong Elementary School, also benefits well from the school-community partnerships as demonstrated in the continuous increase in its NAT ratings. In fact, for SY 2008-2009, the school garnered 73.65 percent—a far cry from its ratings in SY 2005-2006 of 32.24 percent.
Unlike other multigrade schools that receive assistance from international aid agencies like UNICEF and USAID, the schools in Libmanan South District rely solely on their own resources. It took only the leadership of their education district supervisor, Dr. Emilia B. Brusas, for them to reap the benefits of e-IMPACT.
Dr. Brusas introduced to the schools a multigrade instructional scheme based on the IMPACT system that earned praises from among the regional supervisor of multigrade schools in Region V, the school heads and teachers in the district.
Dr. Brusas is a former master teacher with a passion for excellence in instruction. She strove to raise the academic achievement of pupils in her district, particularly those in multi-grade schools. Through a learning matrix guide that she devised, multigrade teachers are able to concentrate more on preparing learning materials instead of devoting so much time on planning lessons. Dr. Brusas also introduced the use of interdisciplinary approach wherein competencies of various subjects are taught by lesson theme, for instance, incorporating Science, Math and English in the celebration of the nutrition month.
The schools are also fortunate to enjoy great support from their government officials and communities. In particular, the active involvement of parents in the learning of their children, serving as teacher aides and resource persons, is truly commendable.
SEAMEO INNOETCH originally developed the IMPACT System or the Instructional Management by Parents, Community and Teachers more than two decades ago as a means to address the problem of access and quality of education. The system is now technologically-enhanced to serve as an alternative learning delivery mode for basic education; hence, the tag e-IMPACT.
