Upcoming Southeast Asian Educators Gathering

Southeast Asian education ministers will converge once more for the 45th SEAMEO Council Conference and the 5th ASEAN Education Ministers Meeting on January 26-29 at the Shangri-La Hotel in Cebu. The back-to-back events will be hosted by the Philippines Department of Education.

High on the agenda of the education officials are issues concerning climate change and its possible integration into the school curriculum, the harmonization of higher education in Southeast Asia, the promotion of mother tongue-based education, the mutual recognition of vocational education curriculum, and collaborative projects to reach the unreached and to attain the goals of Education for All by 2015, among others.

Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is expected to deliver the keynote address on the second day to more than 200 participants comprised of high-level government education officials, and representatives from international organizations and donor agencies of various countries.

The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Council Conference is an annual event, hosted in rotation by some of its member countries, to foster stronger cooperation on education among countries in the region and beyond. On the other hand, the holding of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Education Ministers Meeting in conjunction with the SEAMEC Conference was instituted as a regular meeting of the ASEAN education leaders in 2006.
