Creating a Supportive Learning Environment for Secondary Education

A number of secondary school principals and education officers from the SEAMEO member countries participated in a training intended to upgrade their competencies in creating a supportive learning environment to provide effective leadership and management in their schools and strengthen the provision of good quality basic education.

The representatives from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Timor-Leste, Thailand and Vietnam took part in the two-week course on "Creating a Supportive Learning Environment for Secondary Education". The course was conducted under the SEAMEO Educational Development Fund (SEDF), funded by the Philippine Government as part of its international commitement as a membr of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO).

Among the competencies covered were on maintaining a safe, secure, clean and green school environment; promoting a caring and learning-friendly school atmosphere; creating a learner-centered and interactive learning environment; advocating teching strategies for learner empowerment; promoting reliable assessment of learning; fostering collegiality and professionalism; and promoting life-long learning and technology literacy.

At the end of the course, the participants came up with re-entry plans on what they will undertake to put into action the policy statements that they have drafted. They also came up with plans on how to echo their training with their colleagues.
