Future
Directions in Teacher Development
In the hope of contributing to the
need for more quality teachers through teacher training
and professional development, SEAMEO INNOTECH and
the Korean Educational Development Institute (KEDI)
jointly organized a two-day workshop in November
2006, dubbed "Future Directions in Teacher Professional
Development."
The regional workshop served as a platform for discussing international trends
and issues on pre-service and in-service teacher training, teacher professional
development, teacher accuntability, future directions and possibilities with
key teacher education policy makers and officials in the Southeast Asian region.
The workshop similarly served as a venue for identifying issues and challenges
that beset teacher training and development. Among the major challenges identified
were globalization and internationalization, teacher shortages, ageing teacher
population, and teachers' loss of competitive edge mainly due to low salary.
To achieve fully its objectives, the workshop was divided into three thematic
sessions. These were on (1) pre-service and in-service teacher education and
training: issues, challenges, and approaches; (2) teacher accountability and
educational quality; and (3) teacher professional development: future directions
and possibilities.
The participants from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand,
the Philippines, and Korea, not only had a chance for collaborative sharing of
best practices and reforms in promoting teacher professional development. They
also had an opportunity to gain insights on the kind of training and development
programs being implemented at a Philippine university, which received the highest
level of accreditation in teacher education programs. The De La Salle University
implements programs that are responsive to the educational and professional needs
of its school administrators, faculty, and students alike.
The regional workshop was made possible with funding support from the Ministry
of Education and Human Resource Development of Korea.
