Peace
Education Course in Mindanao
SEAMEO INNOTECH, in partnership with the Asia-Pacific
Center of Education for International Understanding
(APCEIU), recently conducted a four-day training
workshop on peace education and the promotion of
education for international understanding in Lanao
del Norte province in Mindanao, Philippines.
The workshop brought together school administrators,
educators, schoolteachers, student leaders and peace
advocates in civil society in Mindanao. The workshop
was designed to enrich the strategies and approaches
of "promoting the culture of peace and respect
for multi-cultural diversity" through the development
and enhancement of the school of peace.
More specifically, the four-day workshop enriched
the participants' knowledge and skills on the core
issues, teaching methods and the holistic approach
to EIU. It provided them with insights into the various
peace initiatives in Mindanao, and a greater understanding
of the overall peace education efforts in the area.
The visits to schools of peace oriented them with
the critical elements in establishing a school of
peace, and which programs to sustain and institutionalize.
At the end of the workshop, the participants presented
their key action plans founded on learnings and insights
gained from lectures and discussions, visits to schools
of peace and interaction with its major implementers
and stakeholders.
The course ran from November 21 to 24, 2006 and
was made possible through the support of the Ministry
of Education and Human Resource Development of the
Republic of Korea.
