IR2 Year-End Report

From October 2004 to September 2007, the Center is working under contract with the International Youth Foundation for a USAID-funded initiative called Education and Livelihood Skills Alliance (ELSA). The Project will create and expand community-based learning and employment activitites for Filipino young people, ages 30 and under, living in the Philippines in the southern island of Mindanao, including the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

Under IR2. Improving Teaching Capacity for Math, Science and English (Increasing Access to Basic Education Using Innovative Technology), the following activities were undertaken and accomplished:

  1. Advocacy and Education Sector Mobilization

ELSA text2teach officers carried out various dialogues, consultations, program promotions, meetings with the various project stakeholders, specifically DepEd, local school boards, education committees of local government units and other community groups in Cotabato and South Cotabato of Region XII and Maguindanao of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

Several schools, specially in Mindanao were revisited to ensure that all project equipment were in good order.

Mobilization activities focused on the following:

  • Monitoring, evaluation, reporting and dissemination of project activities;
  • Efforts on supplementing the sustainability of the project in the field;
  • Safeguarding of the project equipment;
  • Actual conduct of ELSA text2teach lessons, their plans and schedules at the classroom level; and
  • Development of ALS materials for the non-formal sector.
