Objectives: i) To identify the location of existing primary
and academic secondary schools in Sabah and
Sarawak. ii) To examine the current and future
demand for, and supply of, physical educational
facilities in the two states. iii) To make
recommendations for the future provision of
educational facilities in existing and proposed
primary and academic secondary schools in Sabah
and Sarawak.
Methodology: 1. Instrumentation- The instruments used in the
study are questionaires, unstructured checklists
for one-to-one interviews, group discussions and
observations. 2) Procedure of the study: The
study was carried out in three stages: the
preliminary investigation, the training session
and finally the actual study. 3) Data processing:
Three main types of data were collected. Those
related to; a) Socio-economic factors and
demographic trends. b) Education-these include
the number of schools in each districts,
ownership of the land and school building, and
educational administration and development. c)
School factors-these include basic data about
each school. 4) Analysis of data: The data was
analysed based on the objectives of the study.
The enrolment, class size and other relevant
factors such as transportation, number of
teachers and physical faclities in schools over
the last five years (1981-1986) were analysed. 5)
Mapwork: State maps of Sabah and Sarawak showing
economic activities, transports, population
density, relief and migration trends were
prepared. Two maps of each districts in the two
states were also prepared showing the location of
existing primary and academic secondary schools
and also the proposed new schools of both levels.
Background: The school mapping study is a micro-planning
research project conducted by officers of the
Educational Planning and Research Division of the
Ministry of Education, Malaysia. Other personnel
involved in the study were education officers
from the State including the
headmasters/principals from primary and academic
secondary schools; and officers from agencies
directly involved in the socio-economic and
development planning of the states.The research
project was financed by the Eight World Bank
Loan.
Expected Outcomes: 1) Establishment of new schools. 2) Replacement,
improvement of physical facilities in existing
schools.
