Objectives: This study examined and analysed the relationship
between teacher attributes and effectiveness as
well as student performances in the
teaching-learning situation.Teacher profiles in
terms of qualifications, experience and attitudes
were analysed and attention was also given to
factors relating to positive attitudes and how
these factors promote and sustain motivation in
teachers.
Methodology: The study was conducted in two phases. For phase
1 a questionnaire was administered to a sample of
2423 teachers and 6022 pupils from all over the
country.Phase 2 was an in depth study of the
teaching performances of 12 teachers in the lower
secondary forms.
Background: Under the Eight World Bank Loan (1986-1990), the
government has identified several areas in the
education system to be studied. One of these
areas is teacher effectiveness and the School of
Educational Studies, University Sains Malaysia
was invited by the Ministry of Education,
Malaysia to examine the relationship between
teacher attributes and teacher effectiveness.
Expected Outcomes: The study concludes with recommendations for the
professional development of teachers;increasing
teachers' motivation and job satisfaction; and
development of positive attitudes toward
teaching.
Results to Date: The findings reveal discrepancy between
availability and utilization of teachers in
several subjects. The data show a serious
shortage of specialist teachers in National
Language, Science, English, Geography and
History. It was also found the profiles of an
effective teacher that emerges reflects that of a
teacher who possesses attributes and teaching
skills that are relevant for the pursuit of
academic achievement of pupils. In teacher
motivation, administrative practices, condition
conducive for innovation, service and work
conditions were perceived as most significant in
affecting their motivation for
teaching.Headmasters play an important role
towards excellence in schools. It was found that
teachers felt the proffession had lost the
respect of the public and teachers had negative
attitudes toward pupils who had difficulty in
following lessons and who gave problems. The
study seems to suggest that while certain
qualities contribute to the effectiveness of a
teacher, it is the individual qualities of the
teacher that results in student learning.
