Full text: The Language Elective Programme (LEP) (Chinese) was
  introduced in 1990 and is available in two junior colleges, Hwa
  Chong Junior College and Temasek Junior College.  The aim of the
  programme is to nurture the language talent of students who have an
  aptitude for the Chinese language.  Students in the LEP (Chinese)
  will take the GCE `A' level CL1 Papers 1 & 2 and be given the
  option to offer the Higher Chinese paper.  There will be
  opportunities for them to participate in enrichment activities with
  emphasis on creative writing and appreciation of literary work.  On
  completion of their junior college education, they may apply for
  the PSC's undergraduate awards and those of other organisations to
  continue their study of Chinese language and literature at the
  university level.

  Students interested in the LEP (Chinese) should apply for the
  Language Elective Scholarships (LES) (Chinese) which are jointly
  sponsored by the Singapore Clan Foundation, the Lee Foundation and
  the Singapore Press Holdings.

  Applications for the LES (Chinese) are now open to Secondary 4
  students.  Those interested are to apply using their Secondary 4
  preliminary examination results.  Successful applicants will be
  given provisional admission to the LEP (Chinese) in either of the
  two Junior Colleges in Jan 91.  Final selection of students for
  both the programme and the scholarships will only be made after the
  release of the 1990 GCE `O' level examination results in Mar 91.

  ELIGIBILITY

  Applicants must:

  a.  be Singapore citizens, or children of Singapore citizens, or
  Singapore permanent residents;

  b.  have good overall results in the school Secondary 4 preliminary
  examinations/GCE `O' level examinations obtaining at least

      either  (i) B3 in CL1, or
                  B4 in CL1 and B3 in Chinese Literature
      or     (ii)  A2 in CL2;

  c.  meet the admission criteria for either Hwa Chong Junior College
  or Temasek Junior College.

  TERMS & CONDITIONS OF AWARD

  Successful applicants must offer CL1 at `A' level.  There is no
  restriction on the choice of the remaining subjects for their `A'
  level course.

  They will be granted remission of school fees and paid a
  scholarship allowance of $1000 pa for the two-year pre-university
  course, subject to a review of their performance at the end of
  Pre-U 1.

  They are not required to enter into a bond with the Singapore
  Government or the sponsors of the awards.

  APPLICATIONS

  Applications are to be made on prescribed forms found in the
  information booklet on the Language Elective Scholarships
  (Chinese).  Schools are requested to collect the information
  booklets from the Scholarships Development Branch, 9th Level,
  Ministry of Education during office hours.

  Schools are requested to submit the application forms with a list
  of applicants' names and NRIC numbers to the Executive
  Officer/Scholarships 2, Scholarships Development Branch, 9th Level,
  Ministry of Education by 30 Oct 90.  As we have a tight schedule,
  we regret that late and incomplete applications will not be
  considered.
