Malaysia
Schools
as Community Institution
In Malaysia, the schools are considered as a community
institution, that is why the community serves
as a provider or supporter of schools. In primary
education, the community helps detect dropouts
and reports them to school authorities to ensure
that they continue their studies. The community,
through corporate bodies or organizations, contributes
to the educational funding of poor students. The
community is also takes it upon itself to ensure
that schools and its immediate environ are safe
and conducive for the learning of the students.
E-Learning
for Life: A Malaysian Initiative
The
role of the business sector is highlighted in
Malaysia’s E-Learning
For Life project. A partnership between the
Ministry of Education, bottled drinks giant Coca-Cola
Malaysia and UNDP, the project envisages the facility
set up at selected schools will serve as a school/community
“ICT hub” providing access to ICT
and training to other schools as well as communities
in the vicinity. With an estimated student population
of 1,000 in each school and over 7,000 in each
community, it is expected the ICT hub and the
web-based contents generated by this project will
have a wide-reaching impact. Similarly, it is
expected the training of core groups of both students
and teachers as peer trainers will have a multiplier
effect, reaching hundreds of teachers and over
a few thousand students during and beyond the
life of the project.
