School Committee

The formation of a school committee in every schools in Thailand is mandatory. The school committee serves as an important link of the schools to the community since its membership is composed of representatives from the parents, the teachers, community organizations, the school alumni, the social rule organization, and religion organizers.

Parents’ club, composed of parents and teachers who volunteer to help support school activities are also common fixtures in Thai schools. These clubs regularly hold meetings to find solutions to students’ problems and to exchange ideas about the school curriculum, among others. Parents meet with teachers once every semester to discuss the students’ emotional and spiritual development.

There is an active exchange of services between the school and the community. The school provides training for parents, lends school facilities for use in community functions, and serves as a learning network. The community, on the other hand, offers a learning resource to the school, provides financial support, and donates materials whenever needed. Every district is encouraged to choose a dream school to develop. From this, the collaboration between the school and the stakeholders begin.

Mercy Kindergarten System

The Mercy Kindergarten System began in the 70’s in the slums of Bangkok where pre-school education is viewed as a luxury and therefore not necessary. The idea of Mercy Kindergarten System is to make the schools become the core of the community outreach. The communities help construct and staff the schools located in their neighborhoods. School fees are waived for over 250 families who cannot afford them. Through the efforts of the community members, the kindergarten is also able to provide nourishing lunches and snacks which greatly improve the attendance and performance of students who may otherwise leave school or perform badly because of hunger and malnourishment.
