Private
Education
The
demand for education has resulted in the proliferation
of private institutions offering pre-school
to tertiary level education. The expansion
of private sector education will usefully supplement
public sector efforts. The government therefore
encourages and facilitates the setting up of
education and training institutions by the
private sector.
However,
a more effective monitoring of tertiary institutions
will be undertaken in order to ensure acceptable
standards and quality. Institutions of higher
learning will continue to establish and maintain
co-operation and linkages with the private
sector in various academic programmes, such
as research and development activities, the
sponsorship of academic and research positions
in universities, and on-the-job training for
university students. These linkages will ensure
that graduates of higher learning institutions
will meet the requirements of industry. Closer
collaboration with the private sector will
also be effected through the establishment
of training institutions for specific industries
such as wood products, textiles, and construction.
Training programmes in these institutions as
well as in other public institutions will be
oriented to the requirements of industries.
