June 5, 2018ALS teachers and district supervisors train on life skills
About 100 Alternative Learning System (ALS) mobile teachers and district supervisors from Tacloban and Leyte participated in the back-to-back 3-day Life Skills Training Workshop facilitated by SEAMEO INNOTECH, in partnership with UNESCO, KOICA, and the Department of Education.

As part of the project, Better Life for Out-of-School Girls to Fight Against Poverty and Injustice in the Philippines, SEAMEO INNOTECH facilitated the training workshop to better prepare the ALS teachers and supervisors for the project, building their capacities to deliver quality programs to the learners. The training workshop aims to provide deeper understanding of the changing context of ALS implementers, as well as enhance the competencies of mobile teachers and district supervisors in managing their selves and in building positive relationship with their stakeholders. The training workshop also hopes to strengthen the collaboration between the ALS implementers, in terms of learning exchanges and advocacy for ALS.
This kind of training is said to be a first for the group, where ALS mobile teachers and district supervisors are together and collaborating. It is also a first for the group to attend a training that is not about pedagogy or the content they teach.
“Through this workshop, I learned the importance of knowing ourselves better [as ALS implementers and district supervisors] in order to improve ourselves and better serve our learners for them to be better members of the society,” shared Ms. Lory Gulariza, one of the Public School District Supervisors participating in the workshop.
The back-to-back training workshops were graced by the presence of Dr. Alejandro I. Yman, Chief of the Curriculum and Learning Management Division, and Mr. Alfredo Cafe, Education Program Supervisor of the Alternative Learning System, both from the Department of Education Regional Office 8. Dr. Mee Young Choi, Head of Educatio, and Mr. Marmon Pagunsan, Consultant, both from UNESCO Jakarta also attended the workshops.
Dr. Choi expressed her admiration for the passion and commitment of the teachers and supervisors to the ALS program. “Without you, we cannot move forward [with this project]. We ask for your support and to continue facilitating change in the field,” she said in her closing message.
Better Life for Out-of-School Girls to Fight Against Poverty and Injustice in the Philippines, is a 4-year project of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Jakarta, Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and the Department of Education (DepEd). The project aims to improve the quality of life of girls living in poverty in the Philippines through the establishment and operation of a Girls Education Center. This project is piloting in Tacloban City and Palo, Leyte.
