INNOTECH facilitates workshop to finalize TTL 1 & 2 syllabi

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED), through the UNESCO Bangkok’s project on “Supporting Competency-Based Teacher Training Reforms to Facilitate ICT-Pedagogy Integration”, drafted sample syllabi on Technology for Teaching and Learning (TTL) 1 and 2 for pre-service teachers. On 26-27 July 2016, SEAMEO INNOTECH facilitated the finalization of the said course syllabi.

A year ago, under the same project, a national workshop was held to update and enhance the country’s existing National Competency-Based Teacher Standards (NCBTS), particularly the domain of teacher’s skills in using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching and learning. Through the previous year’s workshop, enhancement of the current Educational Technology (Ed Tech) courses for pre-service teachers was proposed.

Officials and technical staff from CHED and DepEd, representatives from 10 TEIs across the country, selected new teachers, syllabus writers, and representatives from UNESCO and SEAMEO INNOTECH participated in the workshop to finalize TTL 1 and 2 course syllabi. Progress in terms of integrating ICT in the curriculum of the other two countries involved in this project—Nepal and Uzbekistan—was also presented together with the current practices of other countries such as Singapore, Australia, Korea, and Myanmar.

According to Dr. Amelia Biglete, Director of CHED’s Office of Programs and Standards Development, a number of accomplishments have been achieved since the previous workshop. These are the proposed IT competency standard, pedagogy outcome, course outcomes, and the course syllabi. “Next step is to determine how to implement training for teachers who will handle the TTL,” said Dr. Biglete. She also added that once the syllabi have been approved, it will be disseminated to teacher education institutions for adaptation.

The Korean Funds in Trust (KFIT)-funded project on “Supporting Competency-Based Teacher Training Reforms to Facilitate ICT-Pedagogy Integration” aims to enhance the capacities of its member states to review and improve teacher competencies and effectively integrate ICT in the teaching and learning process. Together with Nepal and Uzbekistan, the Philippines has been chosen by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) regional office in Bangkok for the project’s pilot implementation in the Asia-Pacific region.
