Risks and Threats of Digital Technology

Yes, its really true that sometimes violence doesn’t start on-line; it maybe a continuation of what has happened off-line. Being a teacher it is our responsibility to know our learners. the Records of Prior Learning must be properly documented. We should not focus only on educating our learners the proper way on-line, showcasing of good behavior and giving respect of others opinion but we need also to consider the off-line activities. Communicating with parents of what is expected in school and  to their respective homes. A collaboration of learner behavior’s monitoring between teachers and parents during on-line (usually happened in school) and off-line (at home) would really help to improve and instill admirable and desirable values to  the learners.

As our world embraces a digital transformation, modern or digital technology can be an instrument that can help us improve many aspects of our lives which includes transforming the way society teaches and learn. Digital Learning is replacing traditional educational methods more and more each day. I have seen teachers who use technology to inspire, inquiry, research, creativity, and excitement. With this, I understand what a powerful tool it is. But there is a catch. Every opportunity, it is also fraught with risks and threats.

As our lives become increasingly connected, and with learners able to access educational resources on a range of devices, teachers are responsible for ensuring that learners know how to use these devices in a safe manner, not only during learning interventions but in everyday life.

As a teacher, how are we going to help prevent our learners from becoming victims of online violence?

Teachers must inculcate in the minds of learners the need to be always mindful of their behavior whether it is online or offline. As it was stressed out in the Podcast Episode 3 that online violence doesn’t necessarily only start online, it may be a continuation of what has happened offline, and then it continues online.

Teachers should make the learners understand that the internet is a neutral tool, their behavior will determine if the social web can make or break them, and people close to them sharing either the joy and pain of their behavior. Learners must also be reminded that neither the democratic space we enjoy nor their inclination for fun should not be used as a license to commit any forms of online abuse.

That is why we need to be careful and orient ourselves how to handle risk and being harassed online. It is very important we should know our limits. Even how relevant this information is but we should also consider if we are not violating rights. As teachers, this knowledge must made known to our learners. Being careful and responsible in using media to avoid and minimized risk.

Yes I agree with you sir.We need to be disciplined when we engage on an online  conversation.We need to respect ourselves and others. Not because we can post something thru fb we are already entitled to say some hurting and harsh words. As teachers we need to be role models .
