Theme: Rethinking GenAI Competencies for University Teachers

The INNOTECH Seminar Series on Education, Innovation and Technology held on September 16, 2025, featured Professor Lim Cher Ping, Chair Professor of Learning Technologies and Innovation and Co-Director of the Global Institute for Emerging Technologies at The Education University of Hong Kong. His presentation, “Rethinking GenAI Competencies for University Teachers,” examined how generative artificial intelligence is reshaping higher education, particularly the ways students construct knowledge, engage in learning, and interact with their teachers. He emphasized that GenAI use is increasingly student-driven rather than teacher-prescribed, requiring universities to move beyond simply allowing or restricting AI and instead rethink learning activities, assessments, curricula, and institutional practices around how students are already using these technologies.

Professor Lim presented a GenAI Competency Framework for University Teachers designed to respond to limitations in existing frameworks and provide more actionable guidance for teaching practice. The framework covers four dimensions: GenAI Literacy, Curriculum/Learning Design, Teaching and Learning, and Assessment, viewed from both teachers’ own competencies and their ability to empower students to use GenAI effectively. Across basic, intermediate, and advanced developmental levels, the framework moves from basic automation toward guided application and, ultimately, creative human-AI partnership and knowledge co-creation. He stressed that the goal is not simply for students to learn how to use GenAI or learn with it, but to “learn how to learn with GenAI,” strengthening the inquiry, critical thinking, self-direction, and lifelong learning capacities needed in a rapidly changing environment.
