SEAMEO INNOTECH convened the Seminar Series on Education, Innovation, and Technology on July 8, 2026, featuring Dr. Bert J. Tuga, President of the Philippine Normal University. His presentation, “Strengthening Teacher Education in ASEAN: The Strategic Role of the Association of Southeast Asian Teacher Education Network (AsTEN),” placed teacher education at the center of efforts to respond to the evolving needs of learners and education systems across Southeast Asia.
Dr. Tuga highlighted the importance of strengthening teacher preparation and fostering cooperation among teacher education institutions in the region. Through AsTEN, the discussion underscored the value of regional collaboration in bringing institutions together to exchange knowledge and contribute to the continuing development of teacher education across ASEAN.
The session also emphasized that preparing teachers for changing educational contexts requires sustained attention to the quality and relevance of teacher education. Strengthening the institutions responsible for preparing educators can help ensure that teachers are better equipped to respond to the needs of their learners, schools, and communities.
Through the Seminar Series, SEAMEO INNOTECH provided a platform for educators, policymakers, researchers, and other education stakeholders to engage in conversations on teacher preparation, regional cooperation, and the future of education in Southeast Asia.
