Research shows that career-related learning begins early in childhood (Education and Employers, 2018; Institute of Medicine & National Research Council, 2015). Exposure to various professions at a young age can significantly raise children’s awareness and shape their aspirations for the future. Career concepts introduced at an early age can lay the foundation for informed career choices and transitions later in life.
The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC, 2020) highlights early childhood education’s vital role in developing foundational academic skills and fostering social and emotional growth, including understanding future opportunities. Introducing career concepts in a playful, strength-based, and engaging way will spark children’s curiosity, encourage them to explore their varied interests, and develop essential skills, such as self-awareness, problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity.
This Grade 1 Toolkit is tailored to effectively assist schools and educators in introducing children to the concept of careers and making them mindful of jobs in their midst. Drawing attention to jobs that touch their daily lives—such as teachers, doctors, cops, or storekeepers—is a practical way of making career concepts relatable. The Toolkit likewise aims to make children aware of jobs that are considered nonformal or often go unrecognized, such as housework and caregiving, but are equally important.
The Toolkit also seeks to highlight the value of jobs—why jobs exist. It will stress that careers come in many forms and fulfill different purposes, such as earning an income, contributing to the community, and pursuing one’s vocation or passion.
